Group Music Therapy
Our group music therapy sessions are designed to meet the needs of each participant while fostering joy and connection. Whether the focus is on engagement and communication or exploring musical elements and expression, every group shares one common goal: building a sense of community.
Together, we create music, express ourselves, and connect with peers in a supportive and collaborative environment. This service is great for any group of individuals, but especially for organizations within the disability community, long term care sites, and hospital and rehab centres.

Both group music therapy and group music lessons offer a fun group atmosphere and the opportunity to make music and develop musical and non-musical skills. However, there are some key differences! During a group music therapy session, we are using music to focus on non-musical therapeutic goals. Group music lessons typically focus on musical ability, are taught by a music teacher, and usually follow a set curriculum. Group music therapy is guided by a board certified music therapist (MTA training consists of various adaptive music techniques for various needs), and involves clinical observational paperwork completed by the therapist (as opposed to lesson plans).
-
During a group music therapy session, you can expect an engaging and supportive environment where the focus is on achieving non-musical goals through the power of music. Here's what you can look forward to:
Collaboration: You'll work closely with the Music Therapist (MTA) and your peers. This interaction is key to making progress together!
Goals: The primary focus is on non-musical goals, such as improving social skills, communication, and emotional expression, all through music. Depending on the specific group, however, learning musical skills could be a big part of the therapy (e.g., ukulele group for children with upper body issues).
Turn-Taking: Sessions emphasize turn-taking and collaborative social interactions. This helps build social skills and fosters a sense of community within the group.
Adult Participation: In children's groups, each child is accompanied by an adult (parent, guardian, or extended family member). This allows the MTA to guide the adults on how to support the child's development and creates a bonding experience through shared musical activities.
Overall, a group music therapy session is a dynamic and inclusive space where music becomes a tool for growth, connection, and fun!

Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)®
Neurologic music therapy (NMT)® is an evidence-based clinical treatment system that is driven by advances in neuroscience and the understanding of the perception, production, and performance of music — and how music can influence and change non-musical brain and behaviour function. Fun fact: NMT® is now included in the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations.
-
A Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT) is a music therapist with advanced professional training in a standardized system of clinical techniques that use the functional perception of all properties of music to train and retrain brain and behaviour function.
-
NMTs use music (e.g., rhythm, melody, harmony) to address and support neurological and cognitive functions, and improve things like motor skills, speech, and emotional well-being. This service involves creating personalized music interventions that promote neuroplasticity, helping clients achieve their therapeutic goals and enhance their quality of life.
-
NMT® works in areas such as sensorimotor rehabilitation, speech and language rehabilitation and cognitive rehabilitation. NMTs work with many populations including stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), mental health, and other neurological conditions affecting cognition, movement, communication and psychosocial function.
